Bodycam Connectivity: Disconnects, Joining and Playing With Friends

Bodycam multiplayer is peer-to-peer. Here is what v0.8 changed, what Host Migration can and cannot save, and how to diagnose connection problems.

Bodycam multiplayer runs peer-to-peer. That single line explains most connection problems. The official v0.8 announcement puts it plainly: match quality depends directly on the connection between players.

So a disconnect or a failed join usually is not “the servers died”. It often means one player’s connection dragged the session down. This page covers what v0.8 changed, what Host Migration actually saves, and where to look when something breaks.

What v0.8 changed for connections

The official v0.8 announcement lists these networking changes:

  • Improved handling of connection interruptions and closures.
  • Optimized network calls across several systems to reduce bandwidth.
  • Started removing hard references across the project for better network reliability.
  • Rebuilt VOIP through EOS integration.
  • Added Host Migration.
  • Patch V0.8 #1 added a clear error message when the game cannot log in through Steam, replacing a black screen with no explanation.

These changes make a broken session easier to understand and recover from. They do not turn peer-to-peer into dedicated servers. Once you accept that, the symptoms make sense.

Host Migration: what it saves and what it does not

Previously, if the host left, the whole lobby could drop. Near the end of a match this could be abused to deny results.

Host Migration picks a new host by ping when the original disconnects, then tries to restart the match from the latest known state. According to the studio, it can restore:

  • Player positions, magazine ammo, kills, deaths and dropped weapons.
  • Game mode state.
  • Spectator and weather state.
  • Bot state, rebuilt on rehost.
  • The current Wingman round is restarted.

It has one clear limit: it does not apply once a match has ended. If the host leaves after the match is over, everyone returns to the lobby.

Diagnose a problem in this order

1. Read the error before guessing. After V0.8 #1, a failed Steam login produces a clear message. If you see it, confirm Steam is running, the account is fine, and you are not in offline mode. That message exists precisely to replace the old black screen.

2. Separate network problems from performance problems. A one-second hitch at match start is asset loading, not networking. Persistently low frame rates and inconsistent mouse movement are graphics and CPU issues, covered in best settings. Only score jumps, rubber-banding and sudden disconnects are connection problems.

3. After a host leaves, check whether the match had already ended. Host Migration does not apply after the match ends, so everyone returning to the lobby is intended behavior, not a bug. Wait for automatic recovery only while the match is still running.

4. Check your own connection. Peer-to-peer is sensitive to upload and latency. Wired instead of Wi-Fi, pausing downloads and streams, and closing background bandwidth hogs usually beats changing in-game settings.

5. Switch servers when joins fail or lobbies look empty. The Server Browser lets you pick a server yourself. During Early Access, moving to an active server is faster than retrying the same one. Mode differences are on the game modes page.

How to play with friends right now

This is the most misunderstood part of the current build: the party system is not live yet.

The v0.8 announcement says the Party System was well advanced but “not stable enough to release while player connectivity continues to evolve”, so it missed the update. The V0.8 #5 patch notes from September 18, 2026 set out where it stands now: the team’s main focus is “bringing back the ability to queue together and play with friends more easily”, and the party system is being rebuilt on top of a new connectivity layer. That rework also touches anti-cheat, so it is not a switch they can flip back on. No timeline yet. Right now:

  • Quick Play and the Server Browser are solo only.
  • To play with friends, create a game together in the Custom tab.
  • Or join the same server separately.

The studio says it will keep posting updates as the rebuild moves. So a missing friend-invite button is not your fault. The feature has not arrived.

Limits and unknowns

  • Host Migration arrived with v0.8 and the studio describes it as under continued improvement, so behavior can change with patches.
  • This page only states what the official v0.8 announcement and the V0.8 #1 and V0.8 #5 patch notes support. Player reports of latency, packet loss and loading hitches vary by machine and region, and there is no official data to quote.
  • The Party System, duo-queue Wingman and skill-based matchmaking are all still in development with no announced timeline. This page does not predict them.
